The start of a new week can be daunting or even saddening for some. But for one Illinois native this Monday brought excitement and happiness to her. Today, Niles West’s Jewell Loyd was announced as one of the twelve players on the U.S. women’s basketball team headed to Tokyo for the Olympics.
This will be Loyd’s fourth time representing the country after her Team USA appearances at the 2018 World Cup, 2014 World Championship in Moscow, and the 2010 U17 World Championship in Spain.
The Gold Mamba is currently playing for the Seattle Storm in the WNBA and is in MVP race. Through 14 games, she averages 18.9 points on 46.5 percent shooting, 4.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.3 steals, 0.3 blocks, and 2.4 turnovers in 31.9 minutes per game. She’s also shooting 37.5 percent from three and 85.2 from the free throw line. She currently has career-highs in minutes, points, field goal percentage, defensive rebounds, and assists.
She and her teammates hope to be adding some gold to their names when the game begin on July 26.
