Six players are mentioned in today’s blog.

Matas Buzelis is not included on the Sports Reference’s basketball page for NBA & ABA Players Who Attended High School in Illinois. A bit odd considering he did attend Hinsdale South for freshman year prior to transferring out of state.

Ayo Dosunmu is on this list but is listed twice as they recognize Westinghouse and Morgan Park which is not a common design choice on the website. Since they decided to include both schools, it should not matter that Buzelis did not graduate from an Illinois high school so he should be included. Sports Reference will need make clear what is the criteria to be included in that list. I plan to reach out.

October 23

  • Charlotte Hornets defeat Houston Rockets 110-105
    • Fred VanVleet (Auburn) is in year nine and in his second with Houston. Last season, he started in a career-high 73 games (Most games played is 76 set in 2017-18).
      • He played a team-high 37 minutes and scored 14 on a rough night shooting (4-18 FG, 2-11 3PT). He also grabbed four rebounds (two offensive), a team-high six assists, two steals, two turnovers and zero plus-minus. Also, VanVleet was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
  • New Orleans Pelican defeat Chicago Bulls, 123-111.
    • Antonio Reeves (Simeon) was selected by the Pelicans in the second round with the 47th pick about four months back. Not the best debut but better days are ahead. Reeves is scrappy and has nice shot from deep.
      • He got a minute of playing time while going 0-for-3 from the field and 0-for-2 from three point range with a turnover and -3 plus-minus.
    • Ayo Dosunmu (Morgan Park) is already in his fourth season with his hometown team.
      • He scored eight points on 4-for-6 shooting (0-2 3PT) in 25 minutes off the bench. He also had four rebounds, three assists, two turnovers, and a -13 plus-minus.
    • Talen Horton-Tucker (Simeon) is now on his third NBA team but a special one as it is his hometown team.
      • THT saw just eight minutes of play but has a +4 plus-minus. He went 0-for-1 from the field and 0-for-2 from the free-throw line with a turnover but did manage to grab two rebounds and assist one basket.
    • Matas Buzelis (Hinsdale South) is another hometown kid playing for his childhood favorite team. The Bulls took him in the first round of this year’s NBA Draft with the 11th pick.
      • He shot 0-for-3 but had two rebounds, an assist, and a +8 plus-minus.
  • Memphis Grizzlies defeat Utah Jazz, 126-124.
    • John Konchar (West Chicago) has become a vital bench piece for the Grizzlies. Last season, he tied his career in starts (23) because of a diminished roster. This season, he will start things off by coming off the bench as he did on Wednesday.
      • He scored five on a perfect shooting night (1-1 3PT, 2-2 FT) with five rebounds (one offensive), an assist, and a -4 plus-minus.
        • Six Grizzlies grabbed a team-high five rebounds (Aldama, Edey, Huff, Konchar, Morant, and Smart)
