Chicago Fire took to social media on Tuesday morning to share news of their future stadium.
Chicago’s owner Joe Mansueto released a statement which also included some rendering of the proposed $650 million stadium he plans to fund. The Sun-Times did report that is will take millions of public dollars to get the land ready for construction.
This stadium will be a 22,000-seat, soccer-only stadium on the vacant South Loop land known as “The 78.” Below is the rendering of the proposed stadium.
The site was once proposed as a potential new home for the Chicago White Sox.
A outside group even had a baseball diamond installed on the land for promotional purposes to get people to envision the possibilities of the land and area of the city.
Fire FC’s Sparky was featured in a video to squash the south side baseball team and their owners’ dream in a video posted to social media on Tuesday.
Sparky sits on a camping and opens up the newspaper to the stadium news. The tweet reads, “We call dibs on The 78.”
That is definitely a slight jab at the White Sox for sure.
This will be their third home as they have had two stints at Soldier Field (1997-2006 and 2020-now). In between those stints, the played at SeatGeek Stadium.
Wherever they play, fans want not just a home but a home that displays winning soccer on a consistant basis. They have just one top-five finish since 2010.
