The Minnesota Timberwolves named Abdel Mahmoud (Taft) the head coach of the Iowa Wolves, their G-League affiliate.

Abdelfattah’s was a standout at Taft High School before attending Wilbur Wright and later St. Cloud for college. After realizing he would not play in the NBA, he began his coaching career which started at Perspectives in Chicago in 2011.

In 2013, he returned to St. Cloud and spent five seasons as an assistant.

The 2018-2019 season was his first coaching professional basketball. Abdelfattah was an assistant for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and contributed to their G League Championship that season.

He would become the first Palestinian American to be a G League head coach when he took their head coaching job in 2019. During his final season leading the team in 2022, he helped lead the Vipers to a championship and also was named G League Coach of the Year.

That helped propel his talent to his first NBA role as an assistant on the Houston Rockets staff from 2022-2023.

Last season, he was the head coach of the Sydney Kings in the Australian National Basketball League.

He most recently was assistant coach for USA Basketball’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team during the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup in Managua, Nicaragua this past August.

Now as the lead man for the Iowa Wolves, he’s excited to get to work and helped the team and grow their program.

“I am blessed to be named the Head Coach of the Iowa Wolves and to be a part of the Timberwolves organization.” said Abdelfattah.
