Friday evening, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 15-4 behind the pitching of Adam Wainwright (40) and the offense off the bat from Yadier Molina (39), Wainwright, and others. What year is it? Someone just walking up from a coma may be a bit confused but it is in fact 2021.
A bit of history was made in this game as Wainwright and Molina became just the firth battery mates to reach 300 starts. The record is held by Mickey Folich and Bill Feehan with their 324 starts. Between them and Waino-Yadi is Warren Spahn-Dell Crandall (316) and Red Faber-Ray Schalk (306). S/o Columbia’s (now Loras College) Red Faber.
The two made the most of the day on the mound and at the plate. Adam Wainwright went 6.1 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), three walks, and 4 strikeouts. At the plate, Waino was 1 for 3 with a RBI single. Molina also contributed in the Cardinals’ big win, he was 1 for 4 with 2 runs, a grand slam, and 4 RBI.
Despite being up there in age, Wainwright is playing some of his best baseball. Since the break, he is 7-2 with a 1.92 ERA (15 ER/70.1 IP), 0.85 WHIP, 7.7 K/9 and one complete game across 10 starts. His 3 complete games in 2021 lead Major League Baseball.
