Thursday afternoon, Chicago White Sox played their home opening day game against the Detroit Tigers in front of 33,318 fans. The Sox had a four-run lead heading into the seventh inning before they blew the game. They allowed the Tigers to score six runs in the final three innings. Detroit took Chicago’s opener 9-7.
The real story from today’s game came before the game even started. Grace Bauer, 13, walked the game ball to the pitching mound while wearing a ‘Bauer’ jersey. It was an honor of her father, Commander Paul Bauer who was killed in the line of duty earlier in the year. Commander Bauer was a life-long Sox fan.
Grace joined by her mother and a few other relatives watched the National Anthem from home plate. During the anthem, the video board in center projected a picture of Commander Bauer as the team and fans shared a powerful moment.
