Sunday, three former Illinois prep athletes saw minutes in a G League game. Below I look into and share each of their G League performances from February 14.
Billy Garrett, Lakeland Magic
Billy Garrett is one of the best to come out of Morgan Park High School and that says a lot considering the players to come out of that school. During his high school career, he won a 3A State Championship and helped the Mustangs rank No. 22 in the USA Today Super 25 national high school rankings. His senior season, he averaged 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 9 assists a game. The year prior he dropped 25.2 points game while averaging 3 rebounds and 5 assists. He ended up winning or almost winning several other national or state honors during his high school years. His number 5 jersey is now retired by Morgan Park.
Despite being very ill with sickle cell disease, he went on to stay home and play at DePaul. He made an immediate impact in the Big East. He started in 25 of his 31 games as a freshman. He finished the season averaging 12.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3 assists a game. That was good enough to be named the 2014 BIG EAST rookie of the Year
He went on to play four season for the Blue Demons. Garrett played 125 collegiate game while averaging 13.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and just under a steal a game. He finished his college career as DePaul’s all-time leader in made free-throws.
He went undrafted in 2017 but found himself on the G League’s Westchester Knicks squad. In his first season, he averaged 11.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.0 steals in 27.1 minutes per game. He played 2 seasons in Westchester. He did make his NBA debut during his time with the Knicks. On April 3, 2019, he scored 4 points and had 2 assists in his NBA debut in a loss to the Orlando Magic. He became the first player in NBA history with sickle-cell disease.
Since, he’s played in Greece and France, and most recently in the U.S. as a member of the House of ‘Paign. He was the only non-Illini member. Maybe in the future a DePaul Blue Demon team will play in The Basketball Tournament (TBT).
Now, he is back in the G League but this time with the Orlando Magic.
