Kyle Schwarber was once being compared to baseball legend Babe Ruth when he first was making the majors. That was a bit premature and he did not really live up to Ruth levels with the Chicago Cubs but has been the hottest player of the last few weeks with his new team- Washington Nationals. He even has numbers comparable to the likes of Barry Bonds.
After five years as a member of the Chicago Cubs, he was non-tendered in December 2020. The former playoff hero and Cubbie favorite would no longer be on the north side of Chicago after signing a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals. It was unfortunate news at the time during the offseason and it only stings even more now.
Kyle Schwarber is on an absolute tear. He has a MLB-best 16 home runs this month in which the first did not even come until June 12. He is slashing .292/.364/.792/1.155 with 21 runs, 16 home runs, 30 runs batted in over his last 26 games (all of June).
Monday, Schwarber became just the third player to hit 15 home runs in a 17 game stretch. The other two- Sammy Sosa (1998) and Barry Bond (2001).
Tuesday, the 28-year-old slugger kept slugging in the Nats’ win over the Tampa Bay Rays. In his first at-bat of the game, he launched a lead-off home run. This was his seventh lead off home run off the season.
No word on if teams are going to start intentionally walking Schwarber but at this rate, it time or he has an answer.
For now, it’s home run or nothing so consider this your warning MLB teams.
Schwarber had some word to say on Monday about his recent performance and he summed it up well.
“To be honest with you, I want to play stupid.”
