Former Illinois Prep Athletes and their NBA Performances- December 14

Tuesday evening, five former Illinois prep athletes saw minutes in various NBA games. Below I look into and share each of their NBA performances from December 14.

Best of the Day: Fred VanVleet

Rockford native Fred VanVleet was an All-State player while at Auburn High School but was overlooked by many area colleges. The 6-1 guard would later go on to play at Wichita State for four years and win several games and earn several accolades which include two MVC player of the year honors (2014 & 2016). Once again, it was not enough and he ended up going undrafted.

He’s come a long way but the work has paid off. Since joining the Raptors as an undrafted free agent in 2016, he has won a NBA championship and signed a 4-year/$85 million contract. LEGEND.

  • Fred VanVleet (Auburn/Toronto Raptors)- 47 minutes, 31 points, 10/23 FG, 6/14 3PT, 5/5 FT, 4 rebounds, a team-high 9 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers, and +8 in a 131-129 overtime loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

The rest of the performances of the day:

  • Andre Iguodala (Lanphier/Golden State Warriors)- 14 minutes, 2 minutes, 0/4 FG, 0/4 3PT, 2/2 FT, an offensive rebounds, 4 total rebounds, 5 assists, +3 in a 105-96 win over the New York Knicks.
  • Derrick Rose (Simeon/New York Knicks)- 34 minutes, 15 points, 5/13 FG, 3/4 3PT, 2/2 FT, 4 rebounds, a team-high 6 assists, a steal, 2 turnovers, and a -10 in a 105-96 loss to the Golden State Warriors.
  • JaVale McGee (Hales Franciscan/Phoenix Suns)- 8 minutes, 4 points, 2/2 FG, an offensive rebound, 7 total rebounds, a turnover, and +3 in a 111-107 overtime win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
  • Robert Covington (Proviso West/Portland Trail Blazers)- 36 minutes, 8 points, 3/7 FG, 2/5 3PT, an offensive rebound, 7 total rebounds, a block, and +1 in a 111-107 overtime loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Bonus News

COVID cases are on the rise in professional sports, especially in the NBA. Two Illinois guys are now in the NBA’s health and safety protocols. This could result in several missed games for Jevon Carter (Proviso East) and Talen Horton-Tucker (Simeon).
