Thursday evening, just one former Illinois prep athletes saw minutes in various NBA games. Below I look into and share each of their NBA performances from January 6.
Best of the Day: Ayo Dosunmu
Ayo Dosunmu (Morgan Park) did not play Thursday night but was honored by the University of Illinois at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois.
After a winning two state titles at Morgan Park, Ayo did what few Illinois prospect do and decided to stay close to home at play for the Fighting Illini. Although they fell short of winning a national championship, Dosunmu’s contributions to changing the culture of the program has not gone unnoticed.
He did a lot in a short time for the University of Illinois. Ayo brought the fighting Illini back to the NCAA tournament and even got them got them a number one seed his final season in Champaign. Despite his departure, it looks like it will be a program young players want to play at in the future. Here’s an excerpt from my story from my article Morgan Park’s AYO DOSUNMU drafted 38th overall to the Chicago Bulls.
Dosunmu improved his game in almost every stat category during each season at Illinois. During his final year, he averaged201. points on 48.8 percent shooting (including 39 percent from three) with 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.1 steals in 35.1 minutes per game over 28 games. That season, had career-highs in field goal percentage, three-point shooting percentage, points, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, and assists. He played 90 games across his three years in Champaign and averaged 16.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. Some accolade include…
Bob Cousy Award (2021)
First-team All-Big Ten – Coaches (2021)
Second-team All-Big Ten – Coaches (2020)
Big Ten All-Freshman Team (2019)
Illinois capped off the night with a 76-64 win over Maryland. Ayo’s former teammate and star of the Illini team Kofi Cockburn scored 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the win.
And to top it off, Ayo’s Chicago Bulls teammate DeMar DeRozan joined him at the event. It speaks volumes about DeRozan but also the respect players have for Ayo Dosunmu and also how great of chemistry is between players.
