Former Illinois Prep Athletes and their NBA Performances- January 8

Saturday evening, four former Illinois prep athletes saw minutes in various NBA games. Below I look into and share each of their NBA performances from January 8.

Best of the Day: Max Strus

Prior to the Heat-Suns game, Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams had high praise for Max Strus (Stagg) and his shooting ability.

That young man is one of the best shooters in the league and you have to respect his ability get his shots off quickly.”

Strus is currently shooting 41.8 percent from three on 6.3 shots per game. Max is currently Top-48 in the NBA in three-pointers made (76). Many above him have spent most the season starting for their respective teams. It was not until after Thanksgiving and even more recently that Strus has seen more playing time.

  • Max Strus (Stagg/Miami Heat)- 21 minutes, 14 points, 5/9 FG, 4/8 3PT, 4 rebounds, 3 turnovers, and +13 in a 123-100 win over the Phoenix Suns.
    • 3 turnovers is the most he has had in a NBA game.
    • This was Strus’ 5th career start.
    • This was the second game in a row in which the Heat’s first score came from a Max Strus three-pointer.

Rest of the Day’s Performances

  • JaVale McGee (Franciscan Hales/Phoenix Suns)- 6 minutes, 0/1 FG, a rebound, a turnover, and -7 in a 123-100 loss to the Miami Heat.
